 Swami
Vivekananda established the Ramakrishna Mission on 1 May 1897 for
'one's own liberation and for the good of the world, - atmano mokshartham
jagaddhitaya cha.' His Master, Sri Ramakrishna, entrusted him with
a divine commission i.e. to rejuvenate India and world as a whole
by spreading eternal, universal Vedantic truths worldwide. Having
accomplished the task in the West by preaching, "unto mankind their
divinity, and how to make it manifest in every moment of life''
- Swami Vivekananda returned to India and made the momentous decision
of founding the Ramakrishna Mission in order to utilize the spiritual
wealth for the physical, intellectual and spiritual upliftment of
the masses.
This
step was imperative because he had to give a concrete shape to the
profound Vedantic truths, realized and preached by his Master and
himself and "set in motion a machinery which will bring noble ideas
to the doors of everybody". From the profound depth of His spiritual
realisation, Sri Ramakrishna had declared that, 'Jiva is verily
Shiva'- meaning the living being ever present before you is the
supreme manifestation of God. From this utterance Swamiji realised
that for this present Age rendering services to the suffering soul,
done in the spirit of serving God in that form, is true worship
of God. For this not only opens the path for one's own realization
of Truth or Self, but also does immense good to the world.
The
Mission thus has become a royal path for seekers of Truth who serving
God in man can endeavour in the right earnest towards the attainment
of perfection. It is also instrumental in elevating the society
at large.

Inspired
by these ideals, the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram concentrates
on services mainly in the medical sector and in a small way in the
educational sector. The village uplift work has been the dream of
many visionaries of India. The Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram also
has thought of this many times. With its responsibility of making
a modern hospital on the one side and to reach out to the rural
population on the other-it was addressing the problem of health
of the whole demographic area.
